History of sheesha smoking

Sheesha, shisha, narghile, hookah, hubbly-bubbly… there are many names for the traditional water pipe, and they all reflect the various cultures that have embraced it over the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years of its existence.  For the purposes of this short history of the implement we will use only the term “sheesha” (from the Persian word for “glass”) for the sake of simplicity.

Down through the centuries the act of smoking the sheesha has evolved into a beloved ritual in many Middle Eastern countries.  So where did it spring from, this ingenious instrument of conviviality?
